A few days before Deepika Padukone left for Cannes Film Festival 2017 as a first timer and a new L’Oreal Paris Ambassador, she was at a press conference wherein she was promptly asked about the deets at Met Gala 2017.
Any self-respecting woman who grew up watching Gossip Girl or who logs online at least 10 times a day knows the importance of the annual MET Gala and its theme, which, happened to be Rei Kawakubo & Comme des Garçons. The first is the name of a Tokyo-based designer and the second is the name of her brand. Known for her deconstructed designs, Kawakubo doesn’t think fashion is only about wearability but inspiration and artistry. She has single-handedly influenced the ramp by making it more unconventional in the last few decades: one long jacket and a tutu at a time!
Given that I knew who the designer was, it took me 10 minutes to Google this which means Deepika Padukone and her team would have the time too. But she made a mistake in this nightwear when entering the elitist event in New York and everybody noticed. She could have been humble about it, and say mistakes happen. She could have said something about her style statement or she did what she was comfortable with.
However, when told her fans DID NOT like her ensemble, she looked point blank into the camera and said she doesn’t care. She will only care if the people around her (friends and mommy) tell her she’s looking bad. She totally missed the point about not looking good (she always looks good) and pretended to be a person who doesn’t care.
What she did at Cannes 2017, was the opposite of not caring.
Everything from her Goodmorning photos, her #justanothergirlfacade by putting on nail paint before making an appearance, even her pigtails seem rehearsed.
Deepika Padukone’s first look at Cannes 2017 was in a floral full-length dress by Johanna Cortiz. The dress was very achievable if that’s the look she was going for but the actor looked like she was in her element. The eye makeup was dramatic with hues of blue-green on her eyes. I personally thought her base needed a bit more work, but maybe that’s just me.
The second time we saw her, her stylist had taken over the reigns. From being the actor who doesn’t go out of her way to look sexy, Deepika Padukone wore a satin dress (in the daytime) for media interactions. She even gave up her signature bun and opted to look like a Kardashian with a top knot.
I personally thought the smokey eye could have been a little lighter but her makeup was very good.
Soon, it was time to make her Cannes Debut. And all the times she’s said fashion is about having fun were thrown out of the window. In an embellished bodice Marchesa gown, Deepika Padukone’s reservations about cleavage showing seemed to put to rest. She bared her legs and embraced the illusion of sheer on her derriere as she took to the red carpet!
The entourage, the humidity and sheer adrenaline of making it to Cannes Film Festival 2017 may have asked for a re-touch but Deepika Padukone’s style aesthetics had taken her 360-degree turn.
Synonymous with elegance and painstakingly beautiful from her movie promotions, she went all sex-in-your-face!
I don’t know if she wore this yellow dress on Day 1 or Day 2. I think it’s a good outfit and the color looks great on her but she’s missing her shapewear for sure.
Of course, this would be forgotten when her legs came into focus on the red carpet of Day 2, Cannes Film Festival 2017. In an emerald green gown by designer Brandon Maxwell.
Knowing how comfortable she is with both, emerald green and one-shoulder gowns, the only new thing about her gown was her upper thigh-high slit. This time, her dramatic green eyeshadow matched her gown, and her makeup game was on point.
For all that talk about not caring about what she wears, she loves the limelight. You know. When she wants to.
After two days of working hard on her first appearance, Deepika Padukone is back to Mumbai.
