How To Avoid Wrinkles In Your 20s

With high-speed internet, fast-food chains and high-gloss makeup come small realisations. Be it the need to touch-up your selfie before you post it, or your reflection in the rearview mirror of the car, it can’t always be bad lighting. Yes, 20s are too early to worry about ageing but our lifestyles can accelerate our way to wrinkles, spots and other sides of ageing. Here are some tips to combat those wrinkles.

Slather on a sunscreen.

You’ve heard it before but you need to hear it again. UVA and UVB are your skin’s archenemy. Forget tanning, constant exposure to the sun can alter the texture of your skin. Uneven skintone, also known as pigmentation is an early sign of ageing. So we’re not telling you to step out in the sun. You should, definitely (it’s good for health) but after you slather on some sunscreen on exposed areas of your body (face, neck and arms). Many experts also suggest re-applying it once every 6 hours rather than using higher SPF sunscreens. There is a huge variety to buy from: formulas like titanium oxide or zinc oxide are physical sunscreens and will leave a light tinge whereas formulas with Mexoryl will be absorbed by the skin and don’t leave any marks.

You need to sleep.

We understand you’re a busy-bee but your body has a tough time with it. If you don’t sleep for 7-8 hours, your body produces cortisol, a stress-inducing hormone, which likely might the reason behind a crappy day. So here’s an idea: sleep. It also keeps wrinkles at bay. And try sleeping on your back, or keep changing your sides–if you sleep on the same side every day, it may cause lines.

Load up on antioxidants.

They fight free-radicals on your skin and keep your skin’s own collagen from breaking down. Go for anything with Vitamins A, C, E, compounds like beta-carotene which are great for your skin(and your body). Load up on fruits like blueberries, acai berries, pomegranates, green tea and soybeans. Sprinkle superfoods like flaxseeds to your nimbu pani and all your anti-oxidants are right there, in a tall glass!

Break into a sweat.

Don’t go to the parlour for an oxygen facial; instead, go out for a run. Studies have proven that cardiovascular exercises, weight training, and yoga (especially pranayama and meditation) pump up blood circulation, cut out stress and tones your muscles. This, in turn, makes your skin glow and lessens the likelihood of wrinkles.

Give it up.

You know smoking is bad for you: the chemicals, in combination with nicotine, unleash a whole horde of free radicals and pollutants in your system. Even second-hand smoking can cause damage to your skin, so even if you don’t smoke, your skin suffers. Your best bet: don’t accompany your friends for a smoke–your friends will understand. As for drinking, stick to 2 glasses of red wine once in a while or your skin (especially under your eyes) can end up looking puffy. Make up for it the next day by drinking 8-10 glasses of water to flush out the toxins and keep your skin hydrated.

Don’t skip on your night cream.

We know you’re tired but those 10 minutes after you wash your face can really keep you and your skin away from wrinkles. Pat dry your skin (let it be a damp to lock in moisture) and then apply a night cream. Check for ingredients retinols, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), glycolic acids and a horde of vitamins. Night creams are thicker in texture because they are richer and more potent than day creams. Massage onto skin lightly with the tips of your fingers. While you sleep, your skin does more work than it did in the day and renews itself, exfoliating dead cells to waking up to smooth, beautiful looking skin.
