January Entertainment Round Up: Best of Netflix, Koffee with Karan and Movies

Hey, guys!

I spend most of my time on Netflix. And Youtube. And Watch Series and Popcorn TV.

And in between, I manage to squeeze in blogging.

Anyway, it was very cold—Pragati is embracing the joy of minus degree weather in Basel, so we do huddle up in our respective homes and watch a lot of stuff. Here’s what we thought about everything!

NETFLIX

I have been on Netflix India ever since it got launched about 6 months ago. It had about 15 shows back then! My ideal date would be…Netflix and chill. Here’s what we saw on Netflix and made of it!

  1. Chasing Cameron: A Netflix original, this is a show about social media icon, Cameron Dallas—the 22-year-old social media icon, along with Taylor Caniff and Aaron Carpenter. These names mean nothing to you if you are NOT American. But that doesn’t matter ‘coz the show is pretty good for anybody hooked to social media and the personalities that come with it. They have these fabulous lives where an emoticon gets them 15K retweets (I’m happy the day I get 5!) but they also seem to work hard on “MagCon” which basically means meet and greet conferences. While the talent quotient—meaning singing or dancing was a bit low for me, the characters, how well they understand people, and their sheer dedication to online media—is addictive. You know, like Instagram. I have seen six out of ten shows and I think they’re working on Season 2.

  1. House of Cards: I arrived late to the party but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Till I was disgusted by it. And then I went back to enjoying it. In season 1, I was totally on Zoe’s side and when Underwood throws her to the platform, I just stood up. Through seasons 2,3 and 4, the complexities of Claire and Frank’s relationships and partnerships was key to my sensibilities. If you’re like me, and qualities like manipulation, coercion or politics have totally skipped your DNA—you will have something to learn. Season 5—I’m hoping both Doug and Frank’s skeletons are dragged out of the closet by that reporter guy—he’s my only hope.

  2. Breakfast At Tiffany’s: Would you believe me if I said I’ve been staring at Audrey Hepburn’s long-stemmed cigarette holder for 12 years? I’ve seen the movie posters sprawled across painted walls, displayed in my friends’ homes but I never watched it. I wanted to read the book first but when Netflix got it, I went for it. I could go on and on about Audrey Hepburn’s perfect lips—her legendary ear muffs—her cat named “Cat” and her bouffants. But I won’t. The opening scene where Holly Golightly eats her breakfast swooning over the display window of blue-boxed Tiffany’s will resonate with anybody who’s ever wanted something beyond wanting it. And to the lengths she will go for it—mobsters, Brazilians and the works. But love is love. Bleh! I wish I could contradict that.

  3. The Affair: Noah, a writer, swimmer and father of 4 children goes to the suburbs—to his in-law’s extravagant house (they’re rich and don’t really like him) with his 4 kids is insanely attracted to a waitress slash odd job worker. Allison is really good at being a mother whose just lost her 3-year-old son and is mourning in her solitude. Five episodes in, what I really like is that there are always 2 voiceovers and 2 stories: Noah’s and Allison’s. And they’re always different. I love that.

Next on my list:  Roman Holiday, Sherlock and The Crown

What Pragati Watched

On Netflix, I binge-watched Friends, The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family. I am not going to write about these, ‘coz I’m sure you all know them. To me they are classics, they uplift my mood and calm me down almost all the time. They ran in the background while I cooked, stressed or studied. These shows, actually there are 5 shows that are a part of my life, they are family. I will talk a little bit more about these in our next entertainment roundup.

If you’re new to Netflix Switzerland and if you’re a little bit like we are – you guys will love Weeds and Suits. These were my Netflix discoveries which I watched one season a day – they were addictive, fantastic and over the top.

My list for the forthcoming months reads: House of Cards and Sherlock

HOTSTAR

Now we only watch one show here and that’s Koffee with Karan. We’ve been watching for five seasons and just can’t seem to give it up.

Pragati: I just love Karan Johar! I really am not kidding!

Week 1: Shahid Kapoor and Mira Rajput
Manavi Says: Making “arranged marriage” look better than Jeevansaathi.com, both Shahid and Mira belong to the Radha Soami group—this was apparently one of the most common factors amongst the couple, which to me is as good as marrying someone in your own caste. Their chemistry and their candidness about the age gap was fun and exciting to watch but the whole “having a baby” made us fall in love with each other was a bit too much for me. Maybe because I haven’t had a baby.

Pragati Says: OK so let me say something about Shahid Kapoor here, he wasn’t able to hang onto a single leading lady so he goes home, cries a little bit in front of his parents about being bullied and then gets married to this 15 years’ younger nobody. And then they say we follow the same path! I mean what path for god’s sake, you converted Kareena Kapoor into a bloody vegetarian. And yes their love story does not resonate with anyone who belongs to this century – the only realistic parts were the farts and the burps. Falling in love after having a baby, oh come on, aren’t you supposed to hate the man who put you through such pain! On the only positive note, Mira is quite confident and real for Bollywood.

Week 2: Jacqueline Fernandez and Siddhartha Malhotra

Manavi Says: While I’m fond of Siddhartha now, I didn’t really have an opinion about Jackie till now. I thought she was pretty but that’s it. This episode was all about her personality, her flamboyance—she’s an absolute delight to watch and I hope I get to see good films from her. There was definitely some chemistry between Sid and Jackie—also because Karan kept pushing it but Sid is obviously still reeling over Alia. Yes, I know they were dating and keep breaking up and getting back together. It’s OK.

Pragati Says: Ok so Siddhartha is this good looking boy from Defence Colony that we have been seeing since our teen days. He’s an average actor, she’s a below average actor. Why do you call them together? They are hot, and just like all other shows they were there to promote a new movie that will be coming in 2017. So there were definitely some sparks that we saw there, but yeah, they seemed planted. Jackie was her usual giggly self, I particularly loved the coffee shots, ‘coz it was as real as it could get. We like to see the stars get naughty!

Week 3: Kareena Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor

Manavi Says: Wait, let me get my notes.
OK, I’m back. First of all, I’d like to put a disclaimer that growing up, I quite liked Kareena Kapoor and her interviews. I liked it that she went to Harvard and said what are these computers and all. I like it that she gets fat and says that yes, but don’t call me fat, it hurts. I even liked her when she was all up into Saif Ali Khan but I can no longer handle her jananipan. The episode should be titled 3 Deviyaan—headed by Bebo who is pregnant, has a double chin and is short of vocabulary. She wants compliments from Sonam—but doesn’t give back any. She claims not to know anything about “social media” but knows whatever is going and keeps pinging KJo about it. She’s made her her fetus and now Taimoor, popular over the last 9 months but claims she doesn’t step out of the house and doesn’t attend every party, event and fashion show. LMAO.

Sonam was quite guarded and let Kareena hog the limelight—which is what anybody who’s half decent would do.

When discussing Priyanka Chopra and Deepika PAdukone’s successes and entry to La La Land, Kareena did the thinkable. She put her swollen foot into her mouth and said “Very good. Sab Hollywood Ja Rahe Hai!”

Just when I thought this show was a goldmine, she lost her vocabulary. I’m kidding. She’s never had one. Addressing a question that was meant for Sonam, she says how Saif was the last of his kind and says “that combination…that combination…that combination of physical and mental stimulation cannot be found anywhere else.” Acha ya! We would have believed you the first time.

My sympathies to Sonam who is finally coming off as the person she really is! And yes, vegetarianism is something to talk about, Kareena Kapoor.

Pragati Says: Well my sister pretty many nails these things, doesn’t she? Kareena Kapoor from Poo to Pammi… quite a transition ha? In another interview of hers, she has even said things like, “I ask people who does the top work in your house? Or daal feeki kisse achi lagti ha?” I mean, we loved you for your snarky retorts but if this is what we wanted, we could have just joined a Rajinder Nagar kitty circle. To her credit, whoever manages her PR, has made sure that she doesn’t feel neglected/forgotten/ignored during her pregnancy – ‘coz let’s face it, she cannot deal with that! But coming to KWK in the 9th month was over the edge, I almost thought her water will break during the show!

And Sonam…like really…was she even there in the show? I mean the moment she would open her mouth, Kareena would shut it for all of us. I thought Sonam was really boring, trying too hard to act indifferent and intellectual. She was trying to talk about world peace on the wrong show! The rapid fire… had no fire and the cherry on the cake was the vela…jo har episode pe aa jaata hai – Arjun Kapoor.

Manavi Says: I’ve been watching her interviews for 1.5 years now. I’ve seen her on Kelly and Michael, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Ellen Show and she’s fabulous. Her accent did get to me at first but seeing how she admits to putting on an accent, I don’t mind it anymore. I think anybody who can seize an opportunity like her is a true winner!

Pragati Says: From the days of hating her to now really admiring her – PeeCee’s show was a total winner. She came solo and burned the couch! She is now a pro, she’s been everywhere and she’s unapologetic about all her success. She carries it with a lot of grace and the one thing that really resonated with me was when she said, “I want to do everything, you never know when something just stops working”. The fear of failing is real, and a true fighter works on damage control in advance. And I have to stay we got to know a lot about KJo’s encounters as well, and he was, as usual, such a wonderful host and sport!

Movies: Pragati has said she doesn’t have time for movies so I’m gonna do this solo!

Ok, Jaanu!
The first thing that comes to my mind is my boyfriend singing the Tamil version from OK Kanmani or O Kadhal Kanmani (which I have to see on Netflix). Let me get two things out of the way: first of all, there is no real story. Second, of all, humma humma is the worst song of the film. Nothing good can come out of AR Rahman getting into a recording studio with Badshah.

The film almost has modern relationships portrayed ALMOST correctly. Moments, when Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Kapoor cannot wait for work to get over to meet each other—or even move in together and hiding it from their family,  resonates with us (maybe Aditya Chopra should have seen this before gifting us with Befikre). Leela Samson is the most refreshing and real part of the film and will aspire you to have a relationship like that. Or at least let you think about the existence of a partner Paplu aka Naseeruddin Shah! The ending is very unrealistic and so is their lack of fights!

Should you watch it? Yes. But on a weekday. Tickets are cheaper.

Allied
: Let me start by saying that the movie is more about Marion Cotillard than Brad Pitt who has sadly lost his family and apparently had relations with Cotillard too. Anyway, we won’t know about that so let’s get back to the film—great direction and sets by Robert Zemeckis, it really gives you a sense of the way things were back in 1942. You want to save your life—work for your cause—and hope that you find your soul mate.

Should you watch it? Sure.
