Outfit, Jewellery and Everything Else of My Mehendi-Haldi

Hi guys!

Today I’m going to talk about one of the three wedding functions of my Indian Wedding in Jaipur, India. If you’re looking for mehendi designs and inspiration, check out our mehendi section here.

A little background

A colleague at work recommended I download a countdown app. Seeing how I really didn’t know that there were just 20 days left for the wedding.

15 days after the wedding, I still can’t find the words to tell you the level of anxiety I felt right before the wedding. And it was layered: I wanted to look great, I wanted our friends to show up, I wanted us to get along with our families but most importantly, I wanted to know that I was making the right decision. And I could see it as soon as I reached Jaipur.

Seeing how stressed as I was, Srijan (my husband) moved in a day earlier than planned at Diggi Palace, Jaipur just to make sure I slept OK. It didn’t completely work but it made me feel a lot better.

The Makings Of My Mehendi Look

Come Mehendi morning and I decided to go to the salon with the person I trusted the most. After all, he had seen me figure out my Mehendi look for a few weeks now.

He waited patiently as an hour turned to two.

I was ready in an outfit that had been an impulse buy at Anantam and had taken three sessions of alterations at the store. I’d originally bought another outfit to wear for my Mehendi but a few days before the wedding, I was at Anantam looking at beautiful outfits when the saleswoman (who figured my style) put this in front of me. I wore it and decided to buy it in five minutes. It was traditional yet super contemporary. And I could wear it again.

I plan on wearing it again with a different blouse or add some buttons to the jacket for the next wedding I have to attend (or even Diwali).

As for my jewellery, I knew I wanted my hair to be tied up (a braid or a ponytail—and Anamika from Looks Salon Jaipur gave me both) so I just wore long, two-line Polki earrings from the set I’d also bought from Anantam. I was very worried about my ears hanging but I used Ear Lift and thankfully they worked.

How did I find out about Anantam? A colleague told me about it. It has a lot of designers but it is steep.

How much did it cost? The whole look was above Rs 30,000, (USD 438)

PS. Don’t spend on shoes/jootis/chappals because you will take them off as soon as you sit for your Mehendi.

Let The Festivities Begin: Mehendi and Haldi

I was finally ready. So was Srijan. And we headed to our wedding venue, Diggi Palace. The mehendi and haldi were supposed to be in the main courtyard. A canopy that was handpicked by both of us, the courtyard was littered with neon moodas and mehendiwalas. There were 2 sets: my mother-in-law had called local artists for their family while I’d called Raju Mehendiwala from GK 1, New Delhi. You know, because they rock.

OK so honestly I know that Jaipur is famous for their mehendi but when I reached out to people, I got no good references. And it was just easier to get someone I have known for years. Also, my sister’s mehendi didn’t come out well so that was weighing on my mind too.

I think for me, the best part would have to be that Sri was by my side as much as he could be. His haldi ceremony was delayed so he had a lot of time to chill with Pragati (my sister) and Niyati (my niece), meet my friends, Tarini, Ranjan, Abhimanyu, Ridhima and Richa and also receive a lot of his friends who were slowly trickling their way through to Diggi Palace.

Moments where I met my mother-in-law or when Srijan fed me lunch as our friends took his case and Pragati dying to dance are forever etched in my memory.

OK. Now it’s time to drop a truth bomb. I love mehendi. I respect the art and I have loved getting mehendi like any other South Delhi girl. Unlike most brides, I’d specifically asked for no ‘godly’ or dulha-dulhan’ motifs.

I wanted the artists to follow their creativity but sitting like that for four hours is not easy. I got really tired towards the end and was so cranky when taking photos.

So make sure you have someone as awesome as Pragati, Tarini and Srijan who wouldn’t let your mehendi turn into a crib fest.

Meanwhile, Srijan’s haldi ceremony was a sticky affair. Here are a few photos.
